In this video I look at how a differential equation can be formed from a practical situation. This example is based on a liquid cooling down to room temperature and is known as Newton’s Law of Cooling. Here is the example.

Example: Newton’s Law of Cooling

  1. The rate at which a body loses temperature at any instant is proportional to the amount by which the temperature of the body exceeds room temperature at that instant. A container of hot liquid is placed in a room of temperature 19oC and in 8 minutes cools from 83oC to 51oC. How long does it take for the liquid to cool from 27oC to 25oC?
