1EDEXCEL C2 January 2012 Q9
(i) Find the solutions of the equation sin(3x - 15deg) = 1/2, for which 0 <= x <= 180deg. (6) (ii) The figure shows part of the curve with equation y = sin(ax - b), where a > 0 and 0 < b < pi. The curve cuts the x-axis at the points P, Q and R as shown. Given that the coordinates of P, Q and R are (pi/10, 0), (3pi/5, 0) and (11pi/10, 0) respectively, find the values of a and b. (4)

2Edexcel A Level June 2022 Paper 2 Q9
The figure shows a sketch of a Ferris wheel. The height above the ground, H m, of a passenger on the Ferris wheel, t seconds after the wheel starts turning, is modelled by the equation H = |A sin(bt + alpha)deg| where A, b and alpha are constants. A sketch of the graph of H against t, for one revolution of the wheel, is also shown. Given that the maximum height of the passenger above the ground is 50 m, the passenger is 1 m above the ground when the wheel starts turning, and the wheel takes 720 seconds to complete one revolution, (a) find a complete equation for the model, giving the exact value of A, the exact value of b and the value of alpha to 3 significant figures. (4) (b) Explain why an equation of the form H = |A sin(bt + alpha)deg| + d, where d is a positive constant, would be a more appropriate model. (1)
