AlastairJanuary 11, 2017 at 11:55 amI wonder if anyone can help with a seemingly simple equation ( I have been trying to sort this out for a while now-

I must be missing something somewhere!). It’s from the edexcel C1 book- question 2G- 6 (page 25).

Find, as surds roots of-

2(x+1)(x-4)-(x-2)^2.=0 I have tried to multiply this out first, put the result through the quad equation. Also tried completing the square -No luck.

The answer is 1 +/- root 13.

Thank you

Alastair

ps sorry if this is the wrong place to put this.

AlastairJanuary 14, 2017 at 12:31 pmIt does work! You (me) must be very careful when subtracting minus numbers! e.g -8 and a -4 is -8 – – 4 = -8+4. That is where it was going wrong.

Thanks again for a fantastic site.
